WCS Participates in Academic Meets
(April 2009) The spring semester has seen a flurry of academic meets. Westbury Christian School middle and upper school students have been traveling across Texas competing in several academic meets and bringing home top awards.
At the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) District Meet held at WCS in March, 30 WCS students competed. Nine high school students, Audris Ponce, Annie Pan, Emily Pan, Preston Meyers, Ingrid Guan, DeAndre Beadle, Jon Scott and Luis Chung qualified to advance to the State Academic Meet held at Concordia Lutheran University in Austin, Texas. Ingrid Guan placed 2nd in Advanced Math and 1st in Physics. DeAndre Beadle placed 3rd in Solo Acting, Luis Chung placed 4th in Spanish and Annie Pan placed 4th in Math.
Also in March, 30 middle and ten upper school students competed in 12 different science and engineering events at the Regional Science Olympiad held at South Texas College in McAllen, Texas. The middle school students competed as two separate teams with both teams placing 1st and 2nd in the overall category. Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal, shared, “We had a really good trajectory device that 8th grader Bailey Carrow built, and we had a great windmill that 8th graders Kellie Keese and Kaitlyn Vickery built that produced more energy than other entries. Freshmen Remington James and Travis Moles built a bottle rocket that carried a raw egg payload and was airborne for 55 seconds.”
Again in March, 40 middle and high school students traveled to Abilene, Texas to participate in the Texas Christian Schools Interscholastic Tournament (TCSIT) held at Abilene Christian University. Students competed in computing, academic testing and oral events. Eighth grader Tosin Ajiboye placed 1st in extemporaneous speaking and 8th grader Matthew Smith placed 1st in Algebra I.
Greer said, “Our students have been excited to participate in these events. They enjoyed their successes and look forward to competing at a higher level next year.”
