WCS Art Students Compete and Showcase their Talent

(April 2009) Westbury Christian School art students have been hard at work creating art pieces that have been submitted to several recent art competitions.

In the annual Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Art District Competition held at The Awty International School and hosted by Second Baptist School, WCS placed third overall.  Mrs. Karen Keese, WCS Art teacher, expressed “We had three more schools competing this year which made the competition tougher, but I’m very pleased with the hard work that our students put into the competition.”   Keese said 63 pieces were entered and WCS brought home two bronze and five silver medals.

WCS junior Nick Leonard’s piece titled “Leonard’s Athletic Facility” won a bronze medal in the Applied Design category as well as WCS freshman Remington James’ watercolor painting titled “Daydreaming” also winning a bronze medal.  Silver medalists included Pauline Li for her Computer Rendered Art titled “Goggles in Blue” and Andy Fitzpatrick’s Applied Design piece titled “Back to Jurassic.”  Sophomore Amy Miller won silver in the Crafts category for her “Life with Amy” photo collection.  Pauline Li’s “Dancing Shadows” was awarded silver in the Photography, Creative and Experimental category likewise Lauren Washington’s submission in the Senior Portfolio category also won silver.  Mrs. Keese said WCS also had an additional eight honorable mentions, five 4th places, two 5th places and two 6th places.  The art pieces that placed 4th or better qualified to compete at the TAPPS Art State Competition which was held at Concordia Lutheran High School in Austin on April 3rd and 4th.
