Charlie Ward Kicks Off Football Ministry
(August 2008) As the new head football coach at Westbury Christian School, retired NBA player and Heisman trophy winner Charlie Ward plans to kick off the 2008-09 football season with a “Football Family Fun Day” on Saturday, August 16th at 9am. Ward said, “I want to reach out to our community through our football ministry. The theme for the event is to educate families about football and build character through exercise.”
The event will feature a variety of educational workshops including a special presentation on how to prevent and treat heart arrhythmia by a Herman Memorial Southwest cardiologist sponsored by Boston Scientific. Boston Scientific will also provide blood pressure screening. Tonja Ward, Wholistic Nutrition Counselor, will make a presentation on how to nourish the high-performance athlete. “Football 101” will orient Moms on the basics of football rules and the positions that their sons play. The “Manhood Development Football Camp” will pair athletes with their dads and mentees with their mentors for a workout session.
The highlight of the day will be the “Pros vs. Joes” two hand touch football game for a 25 minute running clock duration. Several retired NFL players will be in the Pros lineup including Lamar Lathon and Sean Jones of the Houston Oilers, Spencer Tillman of the Oklahoma Sooners, and David Klingler who played with the Oakland Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals. Klingler will play quarterback on the Pros squad. Charlie Ward will quarterback for the Joes with several WCS dads on the team including Major Adams who is the sports agent for Vince Young. Ward stated that Vince Young will be in training the day of the event.
Several corporate sponsors are contributing to the success of the event. Gulf State Toyota of Houston is donating T-Shirts to each participating athlete; Frito Lay of Houston will be setting up tents, providing snacks and giving in-kind donations; Boston Scientific will be providing a cardiologist and giveaways; and, Global Sports Youth Management has been working with Ward to help organize the event.
The entire Westbury community is invited. Entrance is $10 per athlete and $20 for a family of four.
