WCS In-Service Prepares Faculty for New School Year

(August 2008) Faculty and staff at Westbury Christian School participated in a 10-day in-service designed to prepare them academically, spiritually and physically for the new school year.  According to WCS Upper School Principal Dr. David Lacey, “Each year the in-service program features sessions and workshops designed to enable and empower first-class teaching methodology with a foundation on Christian values.”

The 10-day in-service included writer’s workshops, group discussions on classroom dynamics, departmental meetings, devotionals and special sessions at the Texas Christian Schools Association (TCSA) conference held at Northland Christian School.  Dr. Tim Elmore, the keynote speaker at the TCSA conference, talked about leadership, habits, mentoring and communication in and out of the classroom for effective teaching and learning.

Justin Shepard who will be teaching Physics, Chemistry and AP Chemistry at WCS said, “As a new teacher at WCS, I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know the faculty and staff.  Everyone is so devoted to be not just a better teacher, but a better person in everything they do.”  Kindergarten teacher Kendra Kornegay’s eyes were filled with emotion as she said, “I’m encouraged to be at a private school where people are worshipping the Lord together.  I love kids, and my classroom will be both a loving and a fun place to be.”

Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal, noted that several teachers also participated in professional training at the Rice University Advanced Placement Institutes in Social Studies, English and Science.  At the University of Houston Victoria (UHV – Sugar Land Campus), Melacyn Turner and Randy Parker participated in a middle school science initiative to improve science education in the middle school grades through inquiry labs.

Mr. Greg Glenn, WCS Executive Administrator, said, “With 80 plus Christian educational professionals that WCS currently has on staff, it is no small undertaking in getting everyone on the same page in terms of policy and procedures.”  Glenn said that school principals Dr. David Lacey and Mr. Casey Farris deserve gold stars for their organization and planning that made for a successful teacher in-service.
